Our Story
The Chilean Club of Adelaide
The Chilean Club was created on March 13, 1985, under the shade of a tree at the Pennington Hostel. That day, around 40 passionate people came together with one big idea: to create a club where the Chilean community could stay connected, share our culture, and build something lasting for future generations.
Many of the members were young parents and had the vision of keeping their children connected to their roots and culture.
From the very beginning, the club was all about togetherness. People would organise regular catch ups Pennington Hostel, where we’d cook casuela, asados, and simply enjoy each other’s company. It was a place to laugh, share stories, feel at home and as part of a huge family.
As the club grew, so did the activities. We began organising soccer games at Kilkenny Oval (selling sandwiches from the boot of our cars), teaching Spanish classes, forming traditional dance groups, art classes and music classes. We even established La Escuela Gabriela Mistral, a community school to pass on the language and culture to the younger generation. Those days it was hard to gather all the kids in one place, with parents working, so a couple of the parents who could drive, would go around and pick all the children up.
It was truly the beginning of a huge family!
In those early days, everyone worked incredibly hard. People gave their time, their energy, and whatever resources they had—all to keep the club affordable and accessible to everyone. The biggest focus was to be able to buy a space where everyone could gather and keep growing together.
Now, many of those original members are older. We may not have the same energy we once did, but we’re proud of everything that’s been built. The current committee is doing an amazing job, and the 40th anniversary celebration was a beautiful reminder of how far we've come.
Looking ahead, we hope the next generation will step in and keep the spirit alive. The community may be changing, and the younger crowd might not be as involved just yet—but the heart of the club is still beating strong.
Our doors are open and our community is always welcoming people to join us.
